Positive: I was expecting a bedroom and bathroom, so when there was a lounge and kitchen as well I was very surprised. It's beautifully decorated and very peaceful. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and warm at night. The shower had good water pressure. The grounds are tranquil. I will definitely return. It's owner run, and they are fabulous people.

Negative: There was nothing wrong with the guest cottage. However, I wanted to book an extra night but the guest cottage was already booked. They offered me a different room which I took. It was very kind of them, but unfortunately that place is streets different to the one they've set up for paying guests. It was last minute, so it wasn't all that clean and there were cobwebs. It was extremely cold at night (and noisy windows in the storm, but that can't really be helped). The gas heater for the hot water had a problem and they immediately came to fix it and sorted it out for me. As I said, it is a place they use for family... But they still charged me the same price as for the other really lovely room, and I don't think this one should have been R600, more like R300. They offered to refund me in full for that last night because of the water, but I said it wasn't necessary, the next day they said when I book again I can pay for 2 nights and stay for 3. It was nice of them to make amends. Not sure when I'll want/need to stay 3 nights in Riviersonderend though! Although the actual guest cottage was a really nice place to just be and relax, with 2 large televisions and comfortable bed/couch - it's excellent value for money.
